The "Plus Factor": Why We Support Supplementation at Four Fitness
There is a lot of debate in the wellness world about whether supplements are actually worth the shelf space. A recent article by Sarah Vincelette, for example, suggests that for the "average" person, supplements might not be necessary.
At Four Fitness, we look at things a little differently. We believe that while a "food-first" approach is the foundation, supplementation is a critical addition to the work you are already putting in.
It’s Supplementation, Not Substitution
One of the biggest misconceptions is that people take supplements to avoid doing the work. We see it the opposite way: we do the work, and then we use supplements to improve the results of that work.
If you are training hard and eating 3 to 4 solid meals a day, you are already ahead of the curve. But when you are pushing your body to its limit, "average" nutrition isn't always enough. Adding protein powder or amino acids isn't a shortcut; it's a strategic way to hit the high protein targets required for serious muscle recovery and growth.
The "Body Mass" Variable: Why One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Most supplement labels are written for the "average" adult. But in the fitness world, very few of us are average. Science tells us that dosage is often a function of body weight and metabolic demand.
Take it from experience: if a bottle suggests one pill a day for an average-sized adult, that recommendation might not hold up for someone with a different physical profile.
*The Scale Matters:** If you are 6'6" and 310 pounds of muscle, your body’s surface area and cellular demand are vastly different from someone half your size.
*The Headache Pill Analogy:** Just as a larger person might need a slightly higher dose of a standard headache medication to feel the effects, your muscles may require more micronutrients to function at peak capacity.
When you are carrying significant mass and training with high intensity, understanding these variables makes a massive difference.
Optimization for Daily Performance
We aren't just looking to "get by"; we are looking to operate at 100%.
*Iron & Vitamin B:** We ensure our iron intake is high through our diet, but we add Vitamin B to ensure that iron is actually being utilized and improved within the system.
*Fiber:** We eat our greens, but we take extra fiber to ensure the body is operating accordingly on a daily basis.
The Bottom Line
We aren't scientists, but years of experience in the gym have taught us what the textbooks sometimes miss: Your output dictates your input. If you are living the "Four Fitness Way," supplements aren't just an option—they are the fuel that ensures your hard work doesn't go to waste.
Don't settle for average results by following average labels. Understand your body, do the work, and supplement to win.
